UKPN Services were tasked with developing high-voltage (HV) cable route options at a London Underground substation, an operational, high-security environment with strict access controls and limited working windows. Capturing accurate on-site asset data for design purposes proved challenging, as frequent site visits were impractical and posed safety and logistical concerns. Without clear and current visual records of the space, it was difficult for design teams to assess feasible cable routes, slowing down the optioneering process and increasing project risk and cost.
To address these challenges, UKPN Services engaged AEC360 to provide a detailed 360° digital capture of the substation environment using our Matterport PRO3 scanner. AEC360 conducted a structured site survey, collecting high-resolution imagery and spatial data that documented all visible infrastructure, access constraints, and available routing paths. This data was securely hosted on Matterport’s cloud-based platform, allowing UKPN’s engineers and their client to explore the substation virtually, measure clearances, and assess routing options all from the comfort of their office.
With AEC360’s Manag3d service in place, UKPN Services could carry out cable route optioneering remotely with full confidence in the accuracy of the captured environment. The virtual access reduced the need for additional site visits, significantly improving safety and cutting down on travel-related carbon emissions. It also accelerated decision-making and design development, helping the project stay on schedule while saving time and money. AEC360’s solution transformed a complex, access-constrained task into a streamlined, efficient digital workflow. RFIs and TQs were resolved faster by linking them to the 3D space. AEC360 look forward to deploying our Manag3d service into other UKPN Services projects.
