UKPN Services was tasked with delivering a roof replacement project at a live 132kV substation, an environment with strict safety protocols and limited physical access. These restrictions made it extremely challenging for project teams to capture accurate asset details on-site. Multiple site visits were required for surveys and validation, which not only introduced safety risks but also increased project costs and carbon emissions through repeated travel. With so many critical assets in a high-voltage environment, missing or outdated information could lead to costly delays or rework.
To overcome these challenges, UKPN Services engaged AEC360 to provide a complete digital capture of the substation and its surrounding compound using our advanced Manag3d service. A scanning operative with the correct qualifications and substation entry training was deployed to the site. Through high-resolution 360° imaging and spatial scanning using the Matterport PRO3, AEC360 documented every visible asset within the site within 2 days. This data was then uploaded to the secure Matterport portal, allowing UKPN Services project teams and stakeholders to remotely navigate and review the entire substation, down to individual assets, from their desks. This approach drastically reduced the need for further site access.
Thanks to AEC360, UKPN Services gained a full visual record of the substation, accessible anytime and from anywhere. The ability to virtually inspect the site significantly improved safety by reducing unnecessary physical access to a high-risk environment. It also cut down carbon emissions associated with travel and saved valuable time and costs by eliminating repeated site visits. Ultimately, AEC360 helped UKPN deliver a more efficient, safer, and cost-effective method of asset capture, while setting a sustainable precedent for future infrastructure work.
