MODA Energy, a leading provider of high-voltage expertise and EV charging infrastructure required a fast and effective way of 3D scanning an existing substation and multi-storey car park, for their client McLaren Applied Technologies. The proposed HV substation to Ultra rapid EV charger cable route was complex, with multiple entry and exit points spread across various floors and CMS. Furthermore it was difficult to accurately determine cable lengths and fixings for costing. A method to reduce travel time, capture multiple images, measure in 3D, and hold interim design reviews online to discuss design iterations with the client was essential to successfully delivering a robust design. MODA Energy had no in-house technicians that had the required 3D reality capture expertise.
AEC360 provided a 3D reality capture and point cloud (LIDAR) consultant that held the required substation training and 3D capture knowledge. AEC360 captured all assets via the a Matterport PRO3 and FARO Focus LIDAR scanner. We also utilized our experience in BIM and data management to set scan positions to ensure every asset was captured. Our 3D reality capture consultant spent 16 hours on site, capturing 100s of panoramic images, we processed the scans and images and issued the final models to the client the following week.
AEC360 enabled MODA Energy to deliver a robust, accurate and safe design to their client. The scan has been used by both MODA Energy and their client to review asset locations and design proposals. The LIDAR scan was referenced by CAD engineers to provide AFC drawings with the 134MP images produced by Matterport acting as the go to solution for asset condition checks. Services provided by AEC360 have resulted in improved safety, by removing the staff from the site, reduced the projects’ carbon by eliminating travel, lowered design costs and resulted in a more informed, more collaborative design. We are in talks with MODA Energy to act as their 3D reality capture delivery partner to ensure this approach becomes part of their standard operating procedure.
