UKPN Services were awarded the contract to provide the design and installation of new high-voltage (HV) power cables connected to a London Underground cable shaft head house and substation. However, the site posed several logistical and operational challenges, primarily due to restricted access, confined space access requirements, and stringent safety protocols. These factors made it difficult to accurately capture the required asset details on-site. Multiple survey visits were not only inefficient but also increased health and safety risks, project costs, and carbon emissions from repeated travel into central London.
To overcome these limitations, UKPN Services partnered with AEC360 to carry out a comprehensive digital survey using our Manag3d service and Matterport PRO3 scanners. An AEC360 scanning operative with the correct training and experience was provided to UKPN Services and their client London Underground. AEC360 conducted a high-resolution 360° capture of the shaft head housing, including all visible infrastructure, equipment, and access points. The resulting data was uploaded to the secure, cloud-based Matterport platform, allowing UKPN’s engineering and design teams to virtually inspect and measure the environment in detail, without needing to return to the site. The immersive model supported design coordination and remote planning of works.
Thanks to AEC360’s extensive experience in delivering projects for London Underground, UKPN Services dramatically reduced the need for on-site visits, improving both operational safety and sustainability. The ability to review all asset details remotely from their offices enabled faster decision-making, smoother collaboration across teams, and more informed design of the new HV power cable route. With reduced travel, the project saw a measurable cut in carbon emissions and a reduction in overall costs—ultimately accelerating progress and enhancing project efficiency in a highly constrained urban environment. The AEC360 Manag3d service provided a timestamped scan of the asset prior to any work starting to illustrate the condition of the asset to the client. This resulted in a clear understanding of asset condition and instantly reduced TQs and RFIs.
