UKPN Services needed an effective way to capture a central London substation roof and its assets for conceptual design requirements. Access to the site was restricted, the site was an hour from the design office and work permits were limited. A method to reduce travel time, capture multiple images, measure in 3D, and hold interim design reviews online to discuss site design was essential to successfully delivering a robust design. UKPN Services had no in-house technicians that had the correct access permits and 3D reality capture knowledge.
AEC360 provided a 3D reality capture consultant that held the required access permits, substation training and 3D capture knowledge. AEC360 provided a Matterport PRO3 scan of the entire roof and its assets. We also utilized our experience in BIM and data management to set scan positions to ensure every asset was captured. AEC360 scanned every angle of the roof to enable UKPN Services to measure on demand. Our 3D reality capture consultant spent 4 hours on site, we processed the scan and issued it to the client the following day.
AEC360 have saved UKPN Services 100s of work hours in site reviews and access requests. The digital twin has been used by both UKPN Services and their client to review asset locations and design proposals. It has resulted in a huge improvement in safety by removing the staff from the site, reduced the projects’ carbon by eliminating travel, lowered design costs and resulted in a more informed, more collaborative design. It has functioned as proof of asset condition prior to any on-site work by UKPN Services. We are now working with UKPN Services as a delivery partner to ensure this approach becomes part of their standard operating procedure.
